Honda CR-V Maintenance Schedule 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 | OEM Part Numbers

The most complete Honda CR-V maintenance schedule for the 5th generation — with factory-spec service intervals, genuine Honda OEM part numbers, and the truth about the 1.5T oil dilution issue that every CR-V owner needs to know.

The Honda CR-V maintenance schedule for 2017–2022 covers one of the most popular and most misunderstood generations Honda has ever built. The 5th-gen CR-V introduced a first-ever turbocharged engine, a segment-first hybrid model, and — for owners in cold climates — a documented oil dilution issue that can shorten engine life if ignored.

This guide gives you factory service intervals, genuine Honda OEM part numbers, a plain-English explanation of the oil dilution problem and its fix, and hybrid-specific service items — all in one place. Follow it, and your CR-V will run well past 200,000 miles.

Important Note

Honda's Maintenance Minder adjusts service intervals based on your actual driving — but it doesn't account for the 1.5T oil dilution risk in cold climates. If you own a 2017–2019 CR-V and make short trips in winter, scroll to the oil dilution section before you do anything else.

Honda CR-V Maintenance Schedule 2017–2022 at a Glance

The complete Honda CR-V maintenance schedule for all 2017–2022 models — 1.5T, 2.4L LX, and 2.0L Hybrid. This table reflects Honda's factory-recommended intervals. The CR-V uses Honda's Maintenance Minder system, which adjusts oil change intervals dynamically based on your driving patterns, so treat mileage figures as maximum thresholds, not fixed targets.

Understanding the CR-V Maintenance Minder

Unlike Toyota's fixed-mileage approach, the 2017–2022 Honda CR-V uses a Maintenance Minder system that monitors real driving conditions — engine load, temperature, and trip patterns — to calculate when service is actually needed. When oil life drops below 15%, a code appears on the dashboard.

The Minder shows a main code (A or B) plus one or more sub-codes (1–7) that specify exactly what additional services are required alongside the oil change.

CodeService RequiredNotes
AEngine Oil ChangeOil change only. No filter replacement required at this code.
BOil & Filter + Full InspectionOil + filter change, brake inspection, fluid check, steering & suspension inspection.
1Tire RotationCombine with any A or B service.
2Cabin Air Filter & Air Filter ReplacementReplace both filters. Use OEM part numbers below.
3Transmission / CVT FluidHonda HCF-2 for CVT. AWD rear diff fluid also due.
4Spark PlugsNGK Iridium — rated for 100,000 miles.
5Engine Coolant ReplacementHonda Type 2 Long Life Coolant.
6VTM-4 Rear Diff Fluid (AWD)AWD models only. Honda Dual Pump Fluid II.
7Brake Fluid / Inverter CoolantReplace brake fluid. On Hybrid, also check/replace inverter coolant.
Example: What Does "B12" Mean?

A B12 code means: oil + filter change (B) + tire rotation (1) + cabin & engine air filter replacement (2). This is one of the most common Maintenance Minder codes you'll see around 15,000–20,000 miles on the CR-V.

⚠️ The 1.5T Oil Dilution Problem: What You Need to Know

The 2017–2019 CR-V 1.5T engine has a documented issue where unburned fuel washes past piston rings into the crankcase, diluting the engine oil. The problem is worse in cold climates and during frequent short trips where the engine never fully warms up. Diluted oil loses its ability to protect engine internals and can accelerate wear on bearings, camshafts, and piston rings.

Most Affected Years
2017, 2018, 2019 CR-V 1.5T (EX and above)
Warning Signs
Oil level rising above FULL mark · Gasoline smell in oil
Honda's Official Fix
TSB 18-089 — software update adjusting fuel injection timing & warmup behavior
Recommended Oil Interval
Every 5,000 miles for cold-climate / short-trip drivers
Check TSB Status
Ask dealer to verify TSB 18-089 is applied to your VIN
Worst Conditions
Short trips under 10 min · Temps below 32°F · 87 octane fuel
Check Your Oil Level Regularly

If you own a 2017–2019 CR-V 1.5T and live in a cold climate, check your oil dipstick every 2–3 fill-ups. If the oil level is rising above the full mark, a strong fuel odor is present, or the oil appears unusually thin, change the oil immediately — do not wait for the Maintenance Minder. Contact a Honda dealer to verify TSB 18-089 has been applied to your vehicle.

The good news: 2020–2022 CR-V models benefited from ongoing refinements to the 1.5T engine and earlier TSB software updates already applied at the factory. These years are generally less susceptible to severe dilution, though shorter oil change intervals in cold climates remain a sensible precaution.

Engine Air Filter & Cabin Air Filter

The 2017–2022 CR-V has two separate filters that serve different purposes and use different part numbers. Be especially careful about the engine air filter — the 1.5T gas model and the 2.0L Hybrid use different filters that are not interchangeable.

Engine Air Filter

Replace every 30,000 miles under normal conditions. In dusty environments, high-pollen areas, or if you drive on unpaved roads frequently, inspect at 15,000 miles and replace as needed. A clogged filter reduces throttle response and fuel economy noticeably.

  • 2017–2022 CR-V 1.5T (gas): 17220-5AA-A00
  • 2020–2022 CR-V Hybrid (2.0L): 17220-5K0-A00 — different filter, do not use the gas part

Cabin Air Filter

Replace every 15,000 miles or annually, whichever comes first. Located inside the cabin behind the glove box — a 5-minute job with no tools. A clogged cabin filter causes weak airflow from vents, HVAC odors, and reduced AC efficiency, especially in summer.

OEM cabin filter for all 2017–2022 CR-V (gas and Hybrid): 80292-TF0-G01. This is the standard pollen/dust filter. The same housing accepts aftermarket activated-charcoal upgrades using the same cross-reference number if you prefer odor filtration.

Spark Plugs: Interval & OEM Part Numbers

All 2017–2022 CR-V models leave the factory with NGK Laser Iridium spark plugs rated for 100,000 miles. Unlike the Toyota RAV4 which specifies replacement at 60,000 miles for inspection, Honda's spec is a full 100k — a genuine advantage of iridium construction.

Signs to act before 100k: rough idle, engine misfires, hesitation on acceleration, or a noticeable drop in fuel economy. Never re-gap iridium plugs — they are factory pre-gapped and the fine tip will chip.

Honda CR-V Getting Brakes Serviced

Brakes & Tires

Brake Pads

Honda's Maintenance Minder triggers brake inspections at every B-code service. Replace pads when friction material reaches 2mm or less. Most CR-V owners under normal commuting conditions get 40,000–60,000 miles from the front pads. Hybrid owners often see rear pads outlast front pads by a wide margin due to regenerative braking doing much of the work.

OEM front brake pads for 2017–2022 CR-V: 45022-TLA-A01. Rear brake pads: 43022-TLA-A01. OEM pads use the correct friction compound for Honda's brake bias and ABS calibration — an important consideration for maintaining emergency stop distances.

Tire Rotation

Rotate tires every 7,500 miles, ideally at every oil change. For AWD models, consistent rotation is even more critical — Honda's Real Time AWD system is sensitive to tire circumference differences between axles. Significant tread variation can overwork the rear coupling and cause premature wear. CR-V standard tire sizes: 225/65R17 (LX) · 235/60R18 (EX and above).

CR-V Hybrid (2.0L) 2020–2022 12290-59B-A01 NGK 95660 (ILZKAR8J8SY) 0.030 in (0.75mm) 4
1.5T Owner Note

The 1.5T uses a tighter gap (0.030 in) than the 2.4L LX (0.044 in). Using the wrong plug or the wrong gap will cause misfires. Always confirm your trim level and engine before ordering — EX and above use the 1.5T; the base LX through 2021 uses the 2.4L naturally aspirated engine.

CR-V Hybrid Maintenance: What's Different

The 2020–2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid uses a completely different powertrain architecture from the 1.5T gas model — a 2.0L Atkinson-cycle engine paired with two electric motors and an e-CVT. Most core maintenance intervals are the same, but there are several Hybrid-specific items that can cause expensive failures if skipped.

Additional to the Standard CR-V Schedule

These items are on top of the standard oil, filter, and tire rotation schedule.

Hybrid Battery Inspection
At every B-service (Minder)
Inverter Coolant Inspect
Every 60,000 mi
Inverter Coolant Replace
Every 100,000 mi or Minder sub-code 7
Brake Fluid (Regen Brakes)
Every 3 years regardless of mileage
e-CVT Fluid
Minder sub-code 3 (typically 60k+)
Engine Air Filter (Hybrid)
Part 17220-5K0-A00 — different from gas model

One significant advantage of the CR-V Hybrid: brake pads typically last 80,000–100,000 miles because regenerative braking handles most deceleration, reducing friction brake wear dramatically. However, because the mechanical brakes engage less often, rotor surface rust can develop faster — always visually inspect rotors for deep pitting or corrosion at each service, even if the pads are still thick.

Hybrid Engine Air Filter Warning

The 2020–2022 CR-V Hybrid uses part 17220-5K0-A00 for the engine air filter — NOT the 1.5T filter (17220-5AA-A00). These are physically different parts. Using the wrong filter is a common mistake on Amazon and at quick-lube shops. Confirm your engine before ordering.

Honda CR-V Maintenance Schedule — FAQ

The most common questions 5th-gen CR-V owners ask about maintenance — answered directly, with no dealer upsell.

Honda's Maintenance Minder typically triggers an oil change every 7,500 miles or 12 months under normal conditions using 0W-20 full synthetic. However, if you own a 1.5T engine (any trim above LX), live in a cold climate, or frequently make short trips under 10 minutes, change oil every 5,000 miles to manage the known oil dilution risk. The 2.4L LX and 2020–2022 Hybrid can follow the standard Minder interval.
The OEM Honda oil filter for all 2017–2022 CR-V models (1.5T, 2.4L LX, and 2.0L Hybrid) is 15400-PLM-A02, manufactured by Toyo Roki. This same filter fits nearly all Honda and Acura vehicles from 1984–2025, so it's easy to find at OEM dealers and on Amazon. When ordering, look for listings that show "Genuine Honda" or "Toyo Roki" to confirm OEM quality.
The 2017–2019 CR-V 1.5T engine has a documented issue where unburned fuel from the direct injection system washes past piston rings into the crankcase during cold starts and short trips, diluting the engine oil. Symptoms include the oil level rising above the FULL mark on the dipstick and a strong gasoline odor when checking the oil. Honda released software update TSB 18-089 which adjusts fuel injection timing and prioritizes engine warm-up over cabin heating, significantly reducing the problem. Ask your dealer to confirm the TSB has been applied to your VIN. Even with the fix, owners in cold climates should change oil every 5,000 miles as a precaution.
Engine air filter for the 2017–2022 CR-V 1.5T (gas): 17220-5AA-A00. Engine air filter for the 2020–2022 CR-V Hybrid (2.0L): 17220-5K0-A00 — these are different parts, do not mix them up. Cabin air filter for all 2017–2022 CR-V models (gas and Hybrid): 80292-TF0-G01. Replace engine filter every 30,000 miles; replace cabin filter every 15,000 miles or annually.
The 2017–2022 CR-V 1.5T and 2020–2022 Hybrid use NGK Laser Iridium plugs, Honda part 12290-59B-A01 (NGK #95660, ILZKAR8J8SY), gapped at 0.030 in (0.75mm). The 2017–2021 LX trim (2.4L engine) uses a different plug: Honda part 12290-R40-A01 (NGK 5787, ILZKR7B-11S), gapped at 0.044 in. All plugs are rated for 100,000 miles and should not be re-gapped — iridium tips are factory pre-set.
The CR-V Hybrid follows most of the same core intervals as the gas model. Additional Hybrid-specific items include: hybrid battery system inspection at every B-service, inverter coolant inspection at 60,000 miles (replacement at 100,000 miles or Minder sub-code 7), brake fluid replacement every 3 years regardless of mileage (the regenerative braking system accelerates moisture absorption), and the different engine air filter part number 17220-5K0-A00. Brake pads typically last 80,000–100,000 miles due to regenerative braking.
Press the INFO button on the instrument cluster until the oil life display appears. Hold the SELECT/RESET button for approximately 10 seconds until the oil life resets to 100% and the maintenance required indicator turns off. On some trims, use the steering wheel's left-side controls to navigate to the MAINTENANCE display, then hold the OK button until it resets. The system will display "Maintenance Reset Complete" or simply return to 100% oil life when successful.
